Baby was such a great episode but it was also WEIRD because after watching this show/TV in general for YEARS we know all the beats, and Baby just breezes past them and it’s UNSETTLING.

we’ve seen variations of the Impala Phone Call scene in hundreds of Supernatural episodes - they’re on the phone, they end the call, Dean makes a snappy one-liner about the case they’re heading towards, end scene. but just Baby keeps going past where you expect the cut to be, there’s long silences, there’s meaningless dialogue, and it FEELS OFF. it’s just so clever.

Robbie Thompson wrote those scenes so that you can see exactly where they would have ended in a regular episode and you get to watch them hurtle over that point into settling in for a long drive, rooting around for a drink, making overnight stops on their way across the country, talking about stupid, meandering things that have no bearing on the episode.

I don’t have a conclusion to draw except that it was COOL and BIZARRE and I LIKED IT.
